Report from Christine and Glyn Dawson.

Today we are at Hotel Bicherhof in Mittenwald and slept well in our back to back beds in our attic room. On checking the booking correspondence Christine realised that we were told that this was a very small room and therefore was a lot cheaper price than the others which was OK as it had everything we needed including an on suite shower room, TV and Fridge. Breakfast was good and served in a small dining room. There were five other cortinas parked at this hotel besides ours and it had rained and we noticed that Charles and Linda Hanson’s car was parked underneath a roof spout and had water pouring all over it.

After breakfast we walked to the main street to have a look round the shops. Most shops didn’t open until mid-morning.

Glyn went into one of the first shops we saw which was selling all kinds of gem stones and spotted a beautiful Opal which he asked the price of. The shopkeeper replied that it was 2,000.00 Euro so it was hastily put back and we went on our way to look for more affordable items.

Glyn had an orange coloured T shirt with Cortina logo on and was looking for shorts to match and Christine was looking for a top to match linen pants bought the previous day. Unfortunately we didn’t come across anything suitable but enjoyed looking in the shops, the beautiful painted buildings and lovely views of the distant mountains. There were a couple of heavy showers which stopped play and we sheltered with fellow travellers.

Soon hunger set in so we set off on a hunt for a restaurant with a menu that we could decipher. Glyn ordered a steak meal which he liked but Christine ordered skewers, which turned out to be three small meat medallions on a skewer with chips, not her favourite!

Coming out of the restaurant the weather had brightened up and we had sunshine and we met with Bertel and Maria from Sweden and found another pretty part of town with a giant violin in the middle, a symbol of the town being famous in the past for violin making.

Also in this part of the town was another shop selling gem stones and jewellery. Christine went in and found that the prices were very reasonable and bought a collectors stone in the shape of an egg for a friend and a necklace for herself. Glyn noticed a shiny multicoloured gem stone in the shop window and decided to buy this as a souvenir.

We noticed a beautiful church at the end of the main street in town and while Glyn had a much needed sit down on a seat outside the church Christine went in and took some photos. We then headed back to the hotel for a break and freshen up.

With the blue skies and bright sunshine after lunch some of the group took advantage of the nicer weather and took a cable car ride up into the mountains over Mittenwald.

Having looked at the WhatsApp page on Glyn’s phone we discovered that most of our fellow travellers were going to meet at a bar outside round the corner from the church so we decided to go along in the evening. On the way there Christine asked Glyn to sit on the seat outside the church as she wanted to go in again and had a feeling that something had happened to The Queen as it was reported that the Royal Family had gone to Scotland at short notice where The Queen was staying. The church was empty and Christine quickly said a prayer for The Queen and we went to the bar and had a jolly time with everyone. However, at around 6.30pm someone reported that The Queen had died which was sad news and some of us were upset. However we got over this and had a good time for the rest of the evening.

We made our way back to the Bicherhof Hotel to prepare for our journey to Cortina the following day and sorted everything out, programmed the sat nav and looked at the route before retiring to bed.
